Making the most of your extension

Extending your home is incredibly exciting – but making the decision to extend rather than move has probably been in the planning for a long time. With that in mind, it’s essential you carefully plan your space, your budget and of course, find the perfect partner to bring your extension to life.

These simple steps should get you well on your way to a stress-free extension:

Sit it out

You’ll have a clear idea what you want to use your extension for – whether it’s dining and entertaining, relaxing, playing or a combination of it all. But, before you consider the design and shape of your new space, think about repurposing existing rooms – often extensions and conservatories, especially those that lead into the garden are a really good ‘play’ space so think about how you can create the perfect indoor/outdoor room.

Size it up

Extending your home is all about meeting your family’s needs today – but think about what space you might need in the future. If you’ve got small children they’ll no doubt enjoy bobbing in and out of the garden, so creating an extension that allows for the safe passage of tiny tots is essential. But those little ones soon grow up so think about how your extension can change to meet your future needs. There’s a huge tendency to go for open-plan living, but make sure you zone your space efficiently so all of your family member’s needs can be met.

Solid or Glass

Traditionally extensions are considered to feature a solid roof, typically made up by a builder on site. But times have changed and today, your local CIN member will be able to give you fantastic guidance about what roof is right for your needs – whether that’s a fully glazed conservatory or more modern orangery style. But if you’re looking for a more traditional extension a solid or part glazed/part solid roof might suit your needs better.

See it to believe it

Choosing a member of the Certified Installer Network has many benefits. First, your chosen retailer will be able to give you a full and accurate price for your job – no hidden extras or scope for grey areas! Second, your retailer will give you an accurate start time, advise on the appropriate Building Regulations or Planning Permission required for your job and may be able to give you an artistic impression of what your extension will look like – what could be better?
